Old Fashioned Sugar Cookies

1 1/2 cup butter, softened

2 cups sugar

4 eggs

2 tsp vanilla extract

5 cups all purpose flour

2 tsp baking powder

1 tsp salt

assorted holiday shaped cookie cutters

In a large bowl, using an electric mixer on medium speed, cream together

butter and sugar until smooth. Beat in eggs and vanilla. Stir in flour, baking powder and salt.

Cover and chill dough for at least one hour or overnight.

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Roll out dough on a floured surface to 1/4 to 1/2 inch thickness.

Cut into desired shapes with cookie cutters. Place cookies 1 inch apart on an ungreased

cookie sheet and bake for 8-10 minutes or until very lightly browned. Let cool completely.

Frosting for sugar cookies

4 cups sifted confectioners' sugar

1/4 cup butter, softened

1 tsp vanilla

assorted food colorings

assorted sprinkles and candies for decorating

In a medium bowl, combine powdered sugar, butter and vanilla. Stir until frosting is

well blended, smooth and spreadable. Divide frosting into four small bowls and slowly

add drops of food coloring to each, mixing between additions, until desired color is achieved. Using a

small spatula or table knife, spread a thin layer of frosting on top of each cookie and decorate

with assorted sprinkles and candies as desired. Makes approx 30 average sized cookies.
